Sthlm1925

I’m creating a detailed digital 3D-model of the city of Stockholm as it looked like a century ago. Actually it’s more than a model: it’s a full dynamic simulation with citizens, cars, trucks, trains and trams moving though the city. I put great emphasis on historical accuracy.

Along with the model I’m producing a documentary series on YouTube, along with extra material like tram ride videos.

I’m building this in what is fundamentally a city builder game, Cities: Skylines, heavily modified. I model individual buildings and objects in the 3D software Blender, and import them into the main model.

FAQ

I make this model because I can, because I enjoy it, and no one else has done it; there are no similar models of Stockholm.

The goal is to model the entire city of Stockholm, as it looked like in 1925. That means everything on “malmarna” and some more.

A technical reason: the platform I’m using, the game Cities: Skylines, requires cars, which means that around 1925 is about the earliest possible year.

I’m using old maps, digital image archives, especially from the the city museum, and various other online sources. Sometimes it requires some detective work to figure out what a particular place looked like, and in rare cases I’ll have to resort to educated guesses. But the photo coverage is actually pretty good.
